Dance Science is a growing field of research and study. It aims to investigate dance practice and dancers. It inquires into professional and vocational dancers for examining strategies for performance enhancement and injury prevention in this population. It also explores the impact of dance in health and wellness among other populations. The subject areas within Dance Science include: biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, psychology and somatics applied to the art form. For the last 40 years the field of Dance Science has been fostered, mainly in the United States and in Europe.
Since 1990, it has it's own international association (IADMS -International Association for Dance Medicine and Science) which currently produces a scientific peer-reviewed journal (JDMS - Journal of Dance Medicine and Science) and holds an annual conference. Other key organizations that promote Dance Science would be The Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) and DanceUK.
The pioneer institution to develop a Master's Degree in Dance Science is Trinity Laban Conservatoire, UK. However, nowadays other institutions in Britain offer this programme. Also, it has been taught as an academic discipline part of the dance curriculum both in the US and the UK.
"Corpos Aptos, Gestos Livres" (Fit Body, Arising Movement) is an initiative for education and information acessibility for health in Dance developed in Brazil.
